The WonderCon 2025 Masquerade featured 29 entries, some as solo costumes and some as group entries, making for a total of 46 costumes presented on the stage. As usual, there was a mix of clever re-creations and fully original designs, plus a few entries that fit into both categories as they were either based on animated characters, illustrations, or new interpretations of recognizable characters. The largest group was seven members, and there were some groups of four and five. In addition to the WonderCon trophies and Honorable Mentions given by the guest judges panel, there were organizations, a company, and a pair of our judges that provided their own impressive gifts, cash, and other awards to the winners that they selected, which included an impressive sewing machine! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A big thank you to this year\u2019s Masquerade sponsor, returning after sponsoring our 2024 Masquerade as well. S.G. Blaise <\/strong>is the author of the award-winning book series The Last Lumenian <\/em>and the Mythical Hunters <\/em>comic book series. We appreciate her helping us and the contestants make those thousands of smiles Saturday night! She had a front-row seat for the entire show and thanked the contestants for sharing their amazing work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, a big thank you to our emcee, our guest judges, and the intermission performance groups, all of whom donated their time and talents to the event. We really appreciate them supporting and encouraging the cosplayers who put so much work and heart into their costume creations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our emcee for this year’s Masquerade was once again Ashley Eckstein<\/strong>. Ashley is widely recognized as an actress, author, designer, entrepreneur, host, inspirational speaker, and producer. Known by many fans for originating the character of Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars, she voices Ahsoka in projects such as Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars: Rebels, <\/em>and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. <\/em>Ashley founded the fashion and lifestyle brand Her Universe, and her designs can be found at Disney Parks worldwide. Ashley is currently co-creator, executive producer, and star of a new audio drama for Disney Publishing. She is also an advocate for mental health awareness and is a champion for the Nationwide Children’s \u201cOn Our Sleeves\u201d movement.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the judging intermission, the audience was treated to an amazing modern dance performance by the talented 25 members <\/strong>of the Corps Dance Crew, <\/strong>this year with a Dungeons & Dragons <\/em>game theme. Following their show was an amazing 35-person Star Wars <\/em>lightsaber-filled show by the Lucasfilm-approved Saber Guild <\/strong>performance group and this year the Orange County chapter was joined by members from Los Angeles, Oxnard, San Diego, and Las Vegas chapters! Both of these highly talented groups perform at many conventions, charity events, and other special events, and always present terrific shows with lots of great costuming!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our very enthused audience was estimated at nearly 1,800. Lighting, sound, and video services, including the giant projection screens and lighting effects, were again expertly provided by the team at Show Imaging.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNight Sisters\u201d <\/strong>was a three-person original design entry that greatly impressed the judges and audience with their impressive amount of craftsmanship, creativity, and presentation. \u00a0\u201cNightmare Fantasmic\u201d <\/strong>was a re-creation inspired by the Fantasmic! <\/em>nighttime Disney parks show, which, like the show itself, featured a clever and original onstage transformation, turning the beautiful evil queen into the scary hunched hag, partially accomplished via a life-sized puppet! It was designed and made by Kstroobz Cosplay and Daryl Storey; and worn by Kstroobz Cosplay.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFour\u201d <\/strong>was a lovely, fully original design inspired by the character \u201c4\u201d that appears in The Battle for Dream Island <\/em>animation series as featured on YouTube. It was designed, made, and worn by Stage Props Cosplay.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHatsune Miku Symphony 5th <\/sup>Anniversary Version\u201d<\/strong> was a beautiful and elegant re-creation, bringing to life the design made by the popular Chinese illustrator Rella. 100% self-patterned, taking 253 days to complete, featuring EVA foam work, a fully reconstructed wig, and consisting of two structured dresses that utilized diverse types of corset boning. Designed, made, and worn by Gothikirby Cosplay.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFramboise Showtime\u201d<\/strong> was a re-creation inspired by the amazing work of the Japanese illustrator Sakizo. Taking a costume from a fantasy illustration into an actual wearable costume requires extra ingenuity and skill, and this one accomplished that with impressive beauty as well! \u201cFellowship of the Pumpkin,\u201d <\/strong>was a four-person original design \u201cmash-up,\u201d meshing together Lord of the Rings <\/em>and Cinderella <\/em>in a very clever and entertaining way! Created with 100s of hours of self-drafting, hand embroidery, fabric painting, and a little bit of magic. \u201cWarhammer 40K: Lost in Time\u201d <\/strong>was a five-person original design entry bringing incredible \u201cpowered armor\u201d costumes to the stage, heavily inspired by the popular miniature-using tabletop game Warhammer 40K. Just transporting the costumes and getting them up onto the stage was an impressive achievement. Designed and made by Beyonder Joe. Worn by Joe, Michael, and Amanda Ramirez, with Michele Dickinson.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBarbie\u2019s Dance Party\u201d <\/strong>was a seven-person fun re-creation of a big blow-out party by the world\u2019s most famous doll, featuring many outfits that Barbie fans would recognize. Worn and made by Brianna Roecks, Kie Shimokawa, Caroline Smeby, Lynleigh Sato, Ashley Brown, Wendy Colon, and Colleen Crews.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Industry and Organization awards:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the above awards decided by our judging panel, the following companies and organizations donated their own generous awards, with their representatives selecting their winners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From The Frank & Son Collectable Show:<\/mark>\u00a0<\/strong>A $500 <\/strong>cash award to what their representative deemed to be the audience favorite, by the amount of applause, was presented to \u201cThe Greatest Sith of All Time,\u201d<\/strong> an original design inspired by Star Wars but with many unique elements, <\/strong>made and worn by David Silva. The Frank and Son Collectible Show, in\u00a0the City of Industry, California, presents twice-weekly huge collectibles shows, including special signings and much more. They have donated generous prizes to our competitions for many years!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Oksana Shore Award for Excellence in Craftsmanship:<\/mark><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Beginning at the Comic-Con International 2023 Masquerade, professional costume designer Jennifer May Nichols <\/strong>created the Oksana Shore Award for Excellence in Craftsmanship in honor of the passing of her dear friend and friend to many in the industry, the -incredibly talented costumer Oksana Shore. This was its second presentation at WonderCon and was given to \u201cDorian Storm,\u201d <\/strong>a re-creation from the Critical Role <\/em>video game, with over 13,000 beads, steel chainmail, and hand-embossed leather. It was made and worn by Bron Does Cosplay, who received thread sampler sets donated by Sulky, gorgeous, hand-forged, and engraved shears from Famor\u00e9, a Tamiko Creations accessory pack, a $400 <\/strong>Bernette B05 Academy sewing machine, and an exclusive feature on The Art of Costume series podcast!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From The Costumer\u2019s Guild West:<\/mark><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Their award was presented to the entry \u201cElphaba Thropp,\u201d <\/strong>a terrific re-creation from Wicked, <\/em>made and worn by Noc Bat Cosplay. The Costumer\u2019s Guild West, a California nonprofit costuming fandom group, presented the winner with a one-year membership to their CGW group and a full weekend scholarship and one night\u2019s complimentary hotel stay to their annual weekend conference, Costume College\u00ae, held in July each year in Los Angeles. Costume College promotes the art of costuming by providing educational lectures and workshops on all aspects of costuming!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Comic-Con International Alan Campbell Award:<\/mark><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Guest judge Spencer Williams, host of the popular The Art of Costume <\/em>podcast, where he shares interviews with costume designers from all over the world, chose the winner and presented this $500 <\/strong>cash award to \u201cSuper Sailor Jupiter\u201d <\/strong>made and worn by Missmunchee. The San Diego Comic Convention Board of Directors gives this award in memory of a long-time committee member and board member, Alan Campbell, who passed away and is sorely missed. Alan was a great fan of the Masquerade, often generously donating his own prize. This award was for the entry deemed the best re-creation from comic books or related media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The WonderCon 2025 Guest Judges Bios:<\/mark><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>We are thrilled that these busy individuals attend our show, donate their entire Saturday evenings as our judges, and give our contestants the unique opportunity to meet with them and share their common passions for costumes. They arrive backstage hours before the show to personally view and speak to each entrant close up, listening to what the makers have to say about their costumes and crafting process. Then, after watching each entry present their costume to the audience, they sequester together to compare notes and make their decisions:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jennifer May Nickel <\/strong>was classically trained in theatre and holds an MFA in Costume Design from Carnegie Mellon University. She also studied in England at Oxford University (St. Edmund\u2019s College: Myth and Ritual in Theatre) and at East Stroudsburg University (BFA Theatre). For television, Jennifer\u2019s costume design credits include the CW Network\u2019s Gotham Knights, <\/em>also Legacies<\/em>, as well as Containment<\/em>, Netflix\u2019s Cabin <\/em>with Bert Kreisher, Taylor Tomlinson: Look at You, <\/em>and Quarter-Life Crisis<\/em>, as well as shows for Syfy, Hulu, Nickelodeon, TLC, and The History Channel. She is a member of the Costume Designer\u2019s Guild Local 892, the union of professional costume designers, assistant costume designers, and costume illustrators working in film, television, commercials, and other media. She has judged previously for Masquerades at WonderCon and Comic-Con International in San Diego.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claire Mildred <\/strong>is a professional costume designer, and while now creating costumes for many movies and television productions, she got her start in competitive cosplay, which grew into a passion for costume design. Following her study of Costume Design at Carnegie Mellon University, and her experience as a costuming intern for the Emmys\/Television Academy, she gained many feature credits that include Et Tu, <\/em>starring Lou Diamond Phillips alongside Malcolm McDowell, and Hard Miles, <\/em>starring Matthew Modine alongside Sean Astin. She has judged with our Masquerades before at both WonderCon and Comic-Con International in San Diego.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yaya Han <\/strong>was an invited special guest of WonderCon for this year. She is a cosplayer, designer, and author with more than 25 years of activity in the fandom world. Besides producing over 400 costumes with her high level of craftsmanship skills, Yaya is the first cosplayer to form a bridge between the cosplay and crafting industry. She single-handedly brought cosplay-focused crafting products to mass retail, from a Yaya Han sewing machine to fabric and pattern collections. Yaya has served as a judge for cosplay contests since 2001, including the largest international competitions in the world and on the network TV shows Heroes of Cosplay <\/em>and King of the Nerds. <\/em>She chronicled the evolution of modern cosplay in the book Yaya Han’s World of Cosplay <\/em>and is widely viewed as one of the pioneers of the cosplay ecosystem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spencer Williams <\/strong>is the Lead Editor and Podcast Host at The Art of Costume<\/em>, the popular series dedicated to highlighting the best in motion picture, television, and theatre costume design. The platform focuses not only on spotlighting incredible costumes, but also on costume designers throughout the world. He has also moderated panels featuring professional costume designers and makers both at WonderCon as well as Comic-Con International in San Diego.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judges\u2019 Choice: \u201cCruella\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Was inspired by the costuming of the 2021 Cruella<\/em> movie, but much more than a Re-Creation, this Original Design interpretation of the character was (to use the contestant\u2019s own description): \u201cMy design is one of a kind with elements of \u201970s punk rock mixed with 18th-century style, and with the longest skirt you have ever seen on a runway. My design is unique with handmade jewelry draping the jacket, and the shoulders feature figurines of Cruella\u2019s favorite dog, Dalmatians of course!\u201d Crafted (using 350 yards of fabric) by and worn by Kstroobz Cosplay.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Was a terrific Re-Creation from the extremely popular Final Fantasy VII <\/em>game, impressive indeed to beat out all the other Re-Creations in the show! Made and worn by Poppy Lop Cosplay.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Characters and themes of the popular Disneyland ride were reimagined in human form by this amazing 10-member group. Showgirls, dancing tikis, gorgeous costumes, lots of big feathers, and a modern cover of the song made for a wonderfully fun presentation. Best Workmanship: \u201cMake it Pink, Make it Blue\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Was <\/strong>a Re-Creation \/ Original Design cleverly portraying the Disney\u2019s Sleeping Beauty<\/em> color-changing dress in the middle of its magical transformation. From the contestant herself: \u201cUsing primarily thrifted materials, it took three months to re-create the look from the classic Disney animated film. The design was adapted from a vintage 1950s\u2019 ball gown pattern, with multiple shades of pink and blue fabric and thousands of rhinestones and beads.\u201d Crafted and worn by Alison Fisher.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Was <\/strong>a terrific Young Fan Re-Creation from World of Warcraft, completely handmade by its 16-year-old wearer, Jenny Wang, who hopes to become a costume designer someday.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Honorable Mention for Fabrication Excellence: \u201cThe Prowler\u201d<\/strong> was a spot-on Re-Creation of Earth 42 Prowler Miles Morales from Marvel\u2019s Spider-Verse. Made and worn by Rex Armstrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honorable Mention For Construction and Presentation: \u201cAvatar Kyoshi\u201d<\/strong> was <\/strong>a Re-Creation inspired by the live-action and animated versions of Avatar: The Last Airbender.<\/em> Made and worn by Michelle Maka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honorable Mention for Structure and Silhouette: \u201cThe Chainsaw Devil\u201d<\/strong> was an effectively scary Re-Creation based on the Japanese manga series, made and worn by Nicholas Simonton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honorable Mention for Best Use of Technology: \u201cVox\u201d<\/strong> featured a Re-Creation of a character from the popular animated musical-comedy TV series Hazbin Hotel,<\/em> complete with a TV-screen face that cleverly displayed several different expressions! The award was also presented at WonderCon and included a trophy and a new <\/strong>Bernette BO5 Crafter Sewing Machine,<\/strong> generously donated by Bernette\/Bernina.<\/strong> Jennifer deems it a great heavy-duty machine that can take layers of leather the same way as it manages silks, perfect for both beginner and experienced cosplayers. It was presented to the entry \u201cCruella\u201d<\/strong> made and worn by Kstroobz Cosplay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From The Costumer\u2019s Guild West:<\/strong> <\/strong>Their award was presented to the entry <\/strong>\u201cCaduceus Clay\u201d<\/strong> made and worn by Bronwyn Ellis. The Costumer\u2019s Guild West, a southern California nonprofit costuming fandom group, awarded a one-year membership to their CGW group and a full weekend scholarship and one night\u2019s complimentary hotel stay to their annual weekend conference, Costume College<\/strong>\u00ae, held each July in Los Angeles (winner may choose 2024 or 2025). This year it is July 18\u201322 at the Sheraton Gateway Los Angeles Hotel. Costume College promotes the art of costuming by providing educational lectures and workshops on all aspects of costuming!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The San Diego Comic-Con Alan Campbell Award: <\/strong>Judge Pamela Ford presented this $500<\/strong> cash award on Comic-Con\u2019s behalf to \u201cThe Prowler\u201d, <\/strong>made and worn by Rex Armstrong. The San Diego Comic Convention Board of Directors gives this award in memory of long-time committee member and Board member Alan Campbell, who passed away and is sorely missed. Alan was a great fan of the Masquerade, often generously donating his own prize. This award was for the entry deemed the best Re-Creation from comic books or related media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation: <\/strong>The foundation presented an award to coincide with their annual \u201cMake Cancer Less Scary\u201d public awareness campaign. Since curing cancer requires innovation, their award was for the Most Imaginative entry and was presented to \u201cIsobel Throm\u201d <\/strong>a Re-Creation from the Baldur\u2019s Gate 3 <\/em>game. The award was a special trophy, a $100 Amazon gift card, and articles in their newsletter and social media posts during their fall 2024 campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2024 WonderCon Guest Judges Bios<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Costume Designer Jennifer May Nickel<\/strong> is a proud member of the Costume Designers Guild – IATSE Local 892. Jennifer\u2019s recent credits include costume designing Gotham Knights<\/em> and Legacies<\/em> for the CW Network. For Netflix she designed comedy series and specials for Bert Kreischer and Taylor Tomlinson. Additionally, Jennifer has designed series for Fox, Hulu, Syfy, E!, Funny or Die, Nickelodeon, TLC, The History Channel, and more. The highlight of her career, though, is becoming canon in the DCU as Gotham\u2019s<\/em> premier haute couture designer, May Nickel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frank Ippolito<\/strong> has worked in the film industry for over 25 years and owns Thingergy, one of the premier union prop and specialty costume shops in Los Angeles, contributing to Film and TV shows like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Umbrella Academy, Bullet Train, Black Adam, Rebel Moon, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Ghostbusters: Afterlife<\/em>,<\/em> and many more! He also built and played everyone’s favorite sweater-wearing Mon Calamari on the second season of The Mandalorian.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claire Mildred<\/strong> got her start in competitive cosplay which grew into a passion for costume design. Her many feature credits include Et Tu<\/em> starring Lou Diamond Phillips alongside Malcolm McDowell, and Hard Miles<\/em> starring Matthew Modine alongside Sean Astin. She has judged with us before at both WonderCon and at Comic-Con.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pamela Ford Robles<\/strong> attended the Fashion and Art Institute of Dallas. She is a retired couples dance competitor, judge, and award-winning costume designer for ballroom and swing dancing. She, at one time, had the honor of being the interior designer and muralist for Baseball Hall of Fame member Rollie Fingers. She is the former graphic artist for Coronado Island Stamping, editor for The San Diego Swing Dance Club News, and event logo designer for the dance organization UCWDC. Currently, Pam is the designer and owner of a miniature costuming and pattern company specializing in fantasy, comic book, and movie recreations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WonderCon 2023<\/span> Masquerade<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The 2023 WonderCon Masquerade featured 29 entries, some as solo entries, some as groups, making for a total of 40 costumes having their turns on the stage. As usual there was a mix of clever Re-Creations and totally Original Designs, plus a few entries that somewhat fit into both categories since they were original designs for otherwise recognizable characters. In addition to the WonderCon trophies and Honorable Mentions given, there were six organizations and companies that also donated generous cash and other awards of their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our excellent Mistress of Ceremonies was Ashley Eckstein.<\/strong> Ashley has been widely recognized and honored as an actress, entrepreneur, and author. To WonderCon fans she is likely best known as the voice of Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars: Rebels,<\/em> and Star Wars: Forces of Destiny.<\/em> Ashley is also the founder of Her Universe, a very popular fashion and lifestyle brand for fans. Ashley is also a passionate advocate for mental health awareness and is a champion for the Nationwide Children’s \u201cOn Our Sleeves\u201d<\/em> movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the Judging intermission, the audience was treated to a fun modern dance performance by the highly talented 20-member Corps Dance Crew,<\/strong> followed by a 20-member Star Wars<\/em> light-saber story-performance by the Lucasfilm-approved Temple Prime Saber Guild<\/strong> group. Both of these groups perform at many conventions, charity events, and other special events throughout southern California, and while non-professional in status, always give terrific, choreographed shows with lots of great costuming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our very enthused audience varied in size over the course of the 2 hours and 20-minute event, and at its fullest point numbered nearly 2,000.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPaint It Empire\u201d, a two-person Original Design, using beautiful Tudor and Elizabethan historically inspired and highly detailed designs to re-imagine the Star Wars scene of Anakin Skywalker being turned into Darth Vader by the evil Emperor. It was crafted and worn by Diana Tolin and Ali Weber.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWonderland at WonderCon\u201d, a 4-person Re-Creation from Disney\u2019s animated Alice in Wonderland.<\/em> To bring animated designs more fully to life, 8 months of time was spent crafting and using specially altered fittings to approximate the body proportions of the animated characters, and with a clever stage presentation! Crafted and worn by Prue Dense, Whitley, Gabrielle, and Ryan.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSophie Hatter\u201d, an impressive re-creation of the heroine from the Japanese animated fantasy film Howl\u2019s Moving Castle.<\/em> Crafted and worn by Becca Gibson. Taking an animated character design and interpreting it into the real world can be challenging, and this design succeeded with style and heart.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
