As usual, there was a mix of clever re-creations and fully original designs, plus a few entries that fit into both categories as they were either based on animated characters, illustrations, or new interpretations of recognizable characters. The largest group was seven members, and there were some groups of four and five. In addition to the WonderCon trophies and Honorable Mentions given by the guest judges panel, there were organizations, a company, and a pair of our judges that provided their own impressive gifts, cash, and other awards to the winners that they selected, which included an impressive sewing machine!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A big thank you to this year\u2019s Masquerade sponsor, returning after sponsoring our 2024 Masquerade as well. <strong>S.G. Blaise <\/strong>is the author of the award-winning book series <em>The Last Lumenian <\/em>and the <em>Mythical Hunters <\/em>comic book series. We appreciate her helping us and the contestants make those thousands of smiles Saturday night! She had a front-row seat for the entire show and thanked the contestants for sharing their amazing work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, a big thank you to our emcee, our guest judges, and the intermission performance groups, all of whom donated their time and talents to the event. We really appreciate them supporting and encouraging the cosplayers who put so much work and heart into their costume creations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our emcee for this year&#8217;s Masquerade was once again <strong>Ashley Eckstein<\/strong>. Ashley is widely recognized as an actress, author, designer, entrepreneur, host, inspirational speaker, and producer. Known by many fans for originating the character of Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars, she voices Ahsoka in projects such as <em>Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars: Rebels, <\/em>and <em>Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. <\/em>Ashley founded the fashion and lifestyle brand Her Universe, and her designs can be found at Disney Parks worldwide. Ashley is currently co-creator, executive producer, and star of a new audio drama for Disney Publishing. She is also an advocate for mental health awareness and is a champion for the Nationwide Children&#8217;s \u201cOn Our Sleeves\u201d movement.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the judging intermission, the audience was treated to an amazing modern dance performance by the talented 25 member<strong>s <\/strong>of the <strong>Corps Dance Crew, <\/strong>this year with a Dungeons &amp; Dragons<em> <\/em>game theme. Following their show was an amazing 35-person Star Wars<em> <\/em>lightsaber-filled show by the Lucasfilm-approved <strong>Saber Guild <\/strong>performance group and this year the Orange County chapter was joined by members from Los Angeles, Oxnard, San Diego, and Las Vegas chapters! Both of these highly talented groups perform at many conventions, charity events, and other special events, and always present terrific shows with lots of great costuming!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our very enthused audience was estimated at nearly 1,800. Just transporting the costumes and getting them up onto the stage was an impressive achievement. Designed and made by Beyonder Joe. They have donated generous prizes to our competitions for many years!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong class=\"has-bold-text\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-brand-primary-color\">The Oksana Shore Award for Excellence in Craftsmanship:<\/mark><\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Beginning at the Comic-Con International 2023 Masquerade, professional costume designer <strong>Jennifer May Nichols <\/strong>created the Oksana Shore Award for Excellence in Craftsmanship in honor of the passing of her dear friend and friend to many in the industry, the -incredibly talented costumer Oksana Shore. This was its second presentation at WonderCon and was given to <strong>\u201cDorian Storm,\u201d <\/strong>a re-creation from the Critical Role<em> <\/em>video game, with over 13,000 beads, steel chainmail, and hand-embossed leather. It was made and worn by Bron Does Cosplay, who received thread sampler sets donated by Sulky, gorgeous, hand-forged, and engraved shears from Famor\u00e9, a Tamiko Creations accessory pack, a <strong>$400 <\/strong>Bernette B05 Academy sewing machine, and an exclusive feature on The Art of Costume series podcast!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong class=\"has-bold-text\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-brand-primary-color\">From The Costumer\u2019s Guild West:<\/mark><\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Their award was presented to the entry <strong>\u201cElphaba Thropp,\u201d <\/strong>a terrific re-creation from <em>Wicked, <\/em>made and worn by Noc Bat Cosplay. The Costumer\u2019s Guild West, a California nonprofit costuming fandom group, presented the winner with a one-year membership to their CGW group and a full weekend scholarship and one night\u2019s complimentary hotel stay to their annual weekend conference, Costume College\u00ae, held in July each year in Los Angeles. Costume College promotes the art of costuming by providing educational lectures and workshops on all aspects of costuming!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong class=\"has-bold-text\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-brand-primary-color\">The Comic-Con International Alan Campbell Award:<\/mark><\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Guest judge Spencer Williams, host of the popular <em>The Art of Costume <\/em>podcast, where he shares interviews with costume designers from all over the world, chose the winner and presented this <strong>$500 <\/strong>cash award to <strong>\u201cSuper Sailor Jupiter\u201d <\/strong>made and worn by Missmunchee. The San Diego Comic Convention Board of Directors gives this award in memory of a long-time committee member and board member, Alan Campbell, who passed away and is sorely missed. Alan was a great fan of the Masquerade, often generously donating his own prize. This award was for the entry deemed the best re-creation from comic books or related media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong class=\"has-bold-text\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-brand-primary-color\">The WonderCon 2025 Guest Judges Bios:<\/mark><\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>We are thrilled that these busy individuals attend our show, donate their entire Saturday evenings as our judges, and give our contestants the unique opportunity to meet with them and share their common passions for costumes. They arrive backstage hours before the show to personally view and speak to each entrant close up, listening to what the makers have to say about their costumes and crafting process. Then, after watching each entry present their costume to the audience, they sequester together to compare notes and make their decisions:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jennifer May Nickel <\/strong>was classically trained in theatre and holds an MFA in Costume Design from Carnegie Mellon University. She also studied in England at Oxford University (St. Edmund\u2019s College: Myth and Ritual in Theatre) and at East Stroudsburg University (BFA Theatre). For television, Jennifer\u2019s costume design credits include the CW Network\u2019s <em>Gotham Knights, <\/em>also <em>Legacies<\/em>, as well as <em>Containment<\/em>, Netflix\u2019s <em>Cabin <\/em>with Bert Kreisher, <em>Taylor Tomlinson: Look at You, <\/em>and <em>Quarter-Life Crisis<\/em>, as well as shows for Syfy, Hulu, Nickelodeon, TLC, and The History Channel. She is a member of the Costume Designer\u2019s Guild Local 892, the union of professional costume designers, assistant costume designers, and costume illustrators working in film, television, commercials, and other media. She has judged previously for Masquerades at WonderCon and Comic-Con International in San Diego.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Claire Mildred <\/strong>is a professional costume designer, and while now creating costumes for many movies and television productions, she got her start in competitive cosplay, which grew into a passion for costume design. Following her study of Costume Design at Carnegie Mellon University, and her experience as a costuming intern for the Emmys\/Television Academy, she gained many feature credits that include <em>Et Tu, <\/em>starring Lou Diamond Phillips alongside Malcolm McDowell, and <em>Hard Miles, <\/em>starring Matthew Modine alongside Sean Astin. She has judged with our Masquerades before at both WonderCon and Comic-Con International in San Diego.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yaya Han <\/strong>was an invited special guest of WonderCon for this year. She is a cosplayer, designer, and author with more than 25 years of activity in the fandom world. Besides producing over 400 costumes with her high level of craftsmanship skills, Yaya is the first cosplayer to form a bridge between the cosplay and crafting industry. She single-handedly brought cosplay-focused crafting products to mass retail, from a Yaya Han sewing machine to fabric and pattern collections. Yaya has served as a judge for cosplay contests since 2001, including the largest international competitions in the world and on the network TV shows <em>Heroes of Cosplay <\/em>and <em>King of the Nerds. <\/em>She chronicled the evolution of modern cosplay in the book <em>Yaya Han&#8217;s World of Cosplay <\/em>and is widely viewed as one of the pioneers of the cosplay ecosystem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Spencer Williams <\/strong>is the Lead Editor and Podcast Host at <em>The Art of Costume<\/em>, the popular series dedicated to highlighting the best in motion picture, television, and theatre costume design. The platform focuses not only on spotlighting incredible costumes, but also on costume designers throughout the world. He has also moderated panels featuring professional costume designers and makers both at WonderCon as well as Comic-Con International in San Diego.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once again, the WonderCon Masquerade team gives our great appreciation to our sponsor, S.G. The award was also presented at WonderCon and included a trophy and a new<strong> <\/strong><strong class=\"has-bold-text\">Bernette BO5 Crafter Sewing Machine,<\/strong> generously donated by <strong class=\"has-bold-text\">Bernette\/Bernina.<\/strong> Jennifer deems it a great heavy-duty machine that can take layers of leather the same way as it manages silks, perfect for both beginner and experienced cosplayers. It was presented to the entry <strong class=\"has-bold-text\">\u201cCruella\u201d<\/strong> made and worn by Kstroobz Cosplay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong class=\"has-bold-text\">From The Costumer\u2019s Guild West:<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>Their award was presented to the entry<strong> <\/strong><strong class=\"has-bold-text\">\u201cCaduceus Clay\u201d<\/strong> made and worn by Bronwyn Ellis. The Costumer\u2019s Guild West, a southern California nonprofit costuming fandom group, awarded a one-year membership to their CGW group and a full weekend scholarship and one night\u2019s complimentary hotel stay to their annual weekend conference, <strong class=\"has-bold-text\">Costume College<\/strong>\u00ae, held each July in Los Angeles (winner may choose 2024 or 2025). This year it is July 18\u201322 at the Sheraton Gateway Los Angeles Hotel. Costume College promotes the art of costuming by providing educational lectures and workshops on all aspects of costuming!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong class=\"has-bold-text\">The San Diego Comic-Con Alan Campbell Award: <\/strong>Judge Pamela Ford presented this <strong class=\"has-bold-text\">$500<\/strong> cash award on Comic-Con\u2019s behalf to <strong class=\"has-bold-text\">\u201cThe Prowler\u201d, <\/strong>made and worn by Rex Armstrong. The San Diego Comic Convention Board of Directors gives this award in memory of long-time committee member and Board member Alan Campbell, who passed away and is sorely missed. Alan was a great fan of the Masquerade, often generously donating his own prize. This award was for the entry deemed the best Re-Creation from comic books or related media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong class=\"has-bold-text\">From the UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation: <\/strong>The foundation presented an award to coincide with their annual \u201cMake Cancer Less Scary\u201d public awareness campaign. Since curing cancer requires innovation, their award was for the Most Imaginative entry and was presented to <strong class=\"has-bold-text\">\u201cIsobel Throm\u201d <\/strong>a Re-Creation from the <em class=\"has-italic-text\">Baldur\u2019s Gate 3 <\/em>game. The award was a special trophy, a $100 Amazon gift card, and articles in their newsletter and social media posts during their fall 2024 campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-small has-brand-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cb2be0ea577f0396c8f2488bbc96bb1f\">The 2024 WonderCon Guest Judges Bios<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Costume Designer <strong class=\"has-bold-text\">Jennifer May Nickel<\/strong> is a proud member of the Costume Designers Guild &#8211; IATSE Local 892. Jennifer\u2019s recent credits include costume designing <em class=\"has-italic-text\">Gotham Knights<\/em> and <em>Legacies<\/em> for the CW Network. For Netflix she designed comedy series and specials for Bert Kreischer and Taylor Tomlinson. Additionally, Jennifer has designed series for Fox, Hulu, Syfy, E!, Funny or Die, Nickelodeon, TLC, The History Channel, and more. The highlight of her career, though, is becoming canon in the DCU as <em>Gotham\u2019s<\/em> premier haute couture designer, May Nickel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong class=\"has-bold-text\">Frank Ippolito<\/strong> has worked in the film industry for over 25 years and owns Thingergy, one of the premier union prop and specialty costume shops in Los Angeles, contributing to Film and TV shows like <em class=\"has-italic-text\">Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Umbrella Academy, Bullet Train, Black Adam, Rebel Moon, Dungeons &amp; Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Ghostbusters: Afterlife<\/em><em>,<\/em> and many more! He also built and played everyone&#8217;s favorite sweater-wearing Mon Calamari on the second season of <em class=\"has-italic-text\">The Mandalorian.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong class=\"has-bold-text\">Claire Mildred<\/strong> got her start in competitive cosplay which grew into a passion for costume design. She is a retired couples dance competitor, judge, and award-winning costume designer for ballroom and swing dancing. She, at one time, had the honor of being the interior designer and muralist for Baseball Hall of Fame member Rollie Fingers. She is the former graphic artist for Coronado Island Stamping, editor for The San Diego Swing Dance Club News, and event logo designer for the dance organization UCWDC. In addition to the WonderCon trophies and Honorable Mentions given, there were six organizations and companies that also donated generous cash and other awards of their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our excellent Mistress of Ceremonies was&nbsp;<strong>Ashley Eckstein.<\/strong>&nbsp;Ashley has been widely recognized and honored as an actress, entrepreneur, and author. To WonderCon fans she is likely best known as the voice of&nbsp;<em>Ahsoka Tano in&nbsp;Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars: Rebels,<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Star Wars: Forces of Destiny.<\/em>&nbsp;Ashley is also the founder of Her Universe, a very popular fashion and lifestyle&nbsp;brand for fans.&nbsp;Ashley is also a passionate advocate for mental health&nbsp;awareness and is a champion for the Nationwide Children&#8217;s&nbsp;<em>\u201cOn Our Sleeves\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the Judging intermission, the audience was treated to a fun modern dance performance by the highly talented 20-member<strong>&nbsp;Corps Dance Crew,<\/strong>&nbsp;followed by a 20-member<em>&nbsp;Star Wars<\/em>&nbsp;light-saber story-performance by the Lucasfilm-approved&nbsp;<strong>Temple Prime Saber Guild<\/strong>&nbsp;group.
